The Health Legacy Partnership (HELP)

The goals of the health legacy partnership (help), the creation of a unique public / private effort between the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the Joseph H. Kanter Family Foundation are:

  • Improve healthcare decisionmaking by giving people information – including print and Internet resources - based on scientific research.
  • Support the development of a national outcomes database that will be used by doctors and patients to determine which treatments work best for specific diseases and conditions.
  • Encourage the standardization of health outcomes data throughout the healthcare system so that a national outcomes database can be developed and used.

Department of Health & Human Services -

The Health Legacy Partnership (HELP) is an historic government-private partnership of The Joseph H. Kanter Family Foundation and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). HELP's goal is ambitious: to create a comprehensive exchange database of health outcomes information for a wide range of diseases that will be easily accessible to patients and doctors.

With Foundation support, AHRQ also has produced a step-by-step Patient Guide for people who have been diagnosed with an illness. The Guide, available in a booklet and on the World Wide Web at http://www.ahrq.gov, is titled "Now You Have a Diagnosis: What's Next? Using Health Care Information to Help Make Treatment Decisions."

A recent RANDHEALTH study sponsored by AHRQ and supported by HELP and the Joseph H. Kanter Family Foundation reinforces our mission and the desires of many patients and clinicians. To view this report, go to: http://www.rand.org/publications/MR/MR1708/index.html

HELP is committed to hearing from organizations that have a significant interest in the success of the database project. For more information, e-mail HELP@healthlegacy.org, or call 202-624-3261.
